Alexis De Toqueville (first half of the nineteenth century) : “In the United States the sovereign authority is religious…. there is no country in the world where the Christian religion retains a greater influence over the souls of men than in America, and there can be no greater proof of its utility and of its conformity to human nature than that its influence is powerfully felt over the most enlightened and free nation of the earth.”
It can no longer be said of America that it is the “most enlightened and free nation of the earth”. As to enlightenment, the majority of Americans have been lobotomized by the TV set. Spiritually, morally, and intellectually the lights have gone out in America. As to freedom, we are watching the complete betrayal of our Constitutional liberties as we slide into European style socialism that controls every aspect of our lives. You cannot drink unpasteurized milk without the threat of arrest! (I’m not joking.) Our nation is pathetically dumbed down and remarkably complacent about the loss of liberty. Crime, STDs, drug abuse (prescription and street drugs), abortion, domestic violence, educational failure, and economic collapse are the characteristics of the new America. America is a shadow of its former self.
If the proof of the value (utility) of Christian influence on America is the enlightenment and freedom it produces, then we would expect the removal of that Christian influence to produce exactly what we are seeing today. At the risk of redundancy, it can no longer be said that America is the “most enlightened and free nation of the earth”. Nor can it be said that “there is no country in the world where the Christian religion retains a greater influence over the souls of men than in America”. Let’s see, no Christian influence…America is no longer enlightened or free…you do the math.
